“Multitool” or “Screwdriver”: Which is Better?

All my life, I considered myself a multitool. I was proud that I could do a bit of development, a little design, some marketing, and also act as my own lawyer, accountant, and a DJ in my free time… It seemed to make me indispensable and a strong player. However, in recent years, I’ve come to a simple, exhausting conclusion: it’s easier to be a screwdriver.

Tired of the “One-Man Band”

Solving one specific, focused task and doing it 100% perfectly, rather than ten tasks at 50%—that is true efficiency. Honestly, I’m genuinely tired of the “one-man band” role. Constant context switching and the need to dive into new areas just to plug the next hole is not a path to growth; it’s a path to burnout. I spend an enormous amount of energy becoming slightly competent in everything, instead of becoming the best in one thing.

Meanwhile, I see many of my acquaintances—programmers, testers, managers, athletes—are in a state of flow (their actions stem from their context, not from constant fragmented distractions). This “flow” is what I am searching for.

From antosh.by to antosh.tech: Focus on Development

Why is this post appearing on a brand new address—antosh.tech/ru—and not the usual antosh.by?

Antosh.tech is the next step, aimed at narrow specialization and development within the European market (yes, I am looking towards a universal, multilingual blog platform). It is important to understand: antosh.tech is not some abstract “company” or “team,” but still just me, focused on what I do best: managing the changes and development of the products I am responsible for.

Crucially: all the valuable content I created and published since 2014 on antosh.by remains available at the old address. This is not deleting the past; it’s shifting the focus to the future, where there is no room for diffused focus.

My pseudonym antoshby remains relevant online, now as a DJ and electronic musician in the Techno / IDM / Tech House style—I plan to publish more music, mixes, and live performances under this pseudonym in 2025–2026.

Conclusion about Society and Systems: The Higher the Development, the Narrower the Function

And you know what? The more developed the society or system, the fewer tasks one person needs to solve.

Look at mature markets and large, effective companies:

  • In a startup, one person is a whole system of functions (they are the salesperson, CEO, and packer).
  • In a developed Western system, a person is usually a function.

This is not depersonalization; it is optimization. In a mature structure, you are expected to be excellent in your narrow field. If you are a developer, you don’t need to worry about logistics or HR. The system takes care of everything that is not your core competence.

This is not weakness; it is immense strength. Only a focused specialist (the “screwdriver”) can deliver a world-class product or service. This allows me, at antosh.tech, not just to “do something,” but to create value at a European level.

An Ode to Narrow Specialization

Perhaps being a “screwdriver” sounds less romantic than being a “multitool.” But it’s honest. And it’s effective.

I want to be the best screwdriver, capable of turning the most complex screw, not a multitool with dull blades and squeaky pliers.

And this is the culture I am building here.

What about you—are you still trying to be a multitool?
